someone told me that they can txt msg on there phone for free how do you do that??

The "free txt msg thing" is available only on the TXT and PIX plans VZW offers, and is only good for sending txts and pixs to other Verizon Wireless subscribers. The TXT and PIX pakages are separate from your minutes plans, so you'd better check if you have one, else you're going to pay at the per msg rate from the get-go.
Txting to other US carriers, as well as using the Mobile IM feature, will cost you 1 txt msg out of your package, whether sending or receiving.

with verizon you have to have the in plan its comes with most of the plans though so you may have it
