MarioKart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World, and New Super Mario Bros. are very good games. DO NOT BUY Sims 2. My sister has it and she said it's terrible.

There's a list of the best DS games for 2006 published at http://bestof.ign.com/2006/ds/

My personal favorites, however, are...

1) Final Fantasy III. You are Luneth, chosen by a crystal to find three buddies and go save the world. I think all other RPGs pale in comparison. The graphics look pretty good (not to mention gosh darn cute), and the intro movie is downright impressive. You get to choose from a huge range of jobs, each with its own strengths and weaknesses -- and its own cute set of graphics. I found the story to be engaging and the game play to be a good balance between plot advancement, exploring, and fighting.

2) Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney. Phoenix is a defense lawyer that does a lot of detective work to try to prove his clients innocent. I like the stories and the way they unfolds by selecting the logical next choice. Imagine a detective novel, only you get to choose what the main detective does. The exact wording of the story can be a bit annoying, and the game does seem to talk down to the player a lot, but I can't seem to put it down for some reason.

3) Brain Age. OK, it's not for the game play, and if you try to approach it as if it's supposed to be fun, you'll probably hate it. However, with microphone and touch screen support, it's an excellent demonstration of the capabilities of the NDS machine for people who might not otherwise understand. My brother's a doctor, and he was interested in Brain Age. I don't know how many times my parents have told me that playing video games was a pathetic waste of time and such, but even they want Brain Age. Heh.

4) Elite Beat Agents. It's a rhythm game in which you tap and move and spin the stylus to the beat. Each song comes with a silly, wacky, and very brief background story in comic form in which you have to cheer the person to fame, riches, or happiness. If you like EBA, there's also the Japanese version called "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan" with completely different songs and stories.
