I can't imagine why anyone would want to kill grass! Is it because you don't want to spend an hour a week to tend it? The amount of insects and birds that need grass for feeding and breeding is phenomenal. Join the herd and get it all gravelled or decked a la Alan Titchmarsh! There's a load of weedkillers out there that will do the job admirably whilst polluting the waterways and soil. It's a shame, shame, shame!

If you have a small area of grass to kill, say for a flower bed, cover it with wet layers of newspaper and weight these down with stones or dirt. This is most effective during the warm growing season. It should take a couple of weeks, depending upon the weather. For large areas, you will probably need glyphosate (Round-up). It also works best in warm weather and takes up to four applications to be 100 percent effective.

Covering it with an opaque object is the most effective way. As grass has such small roots it uses photosynthesis as its main source of energy conversion.
Only down side to using this would be the mess left behind, unlike using plant killers it wont dry the grass out. Dew and condensation will form underneith the opaque material and may cause a small odour and/or squishy mess.

the best way of killing grass is either use a weed killer called round up,or try hiring a small turf cutter and lift the old lawn completely.it is always handy to put a squirt of washing up liquid in your weed killer as it tends to stick to the plant and not run off it.
