It is a live ball, usually the batter will run down to first and timeout will be called out of respect for the injured player.

The play keeps going. There is a story that after World War II the Athletics had a pitcher with an aluminum prothesis to replace part of his calf that was blown off in Italy. Ted Williams lined a shot off his leg knocking him down. Williams ran to first, called time and ran to the pitcher.
On the other hand, Yankee shortstop Phil Rizzutto would bunt whenever that guy pitched. Either way, the ball is in play.

Yeah, what everybody is saying is right. I saw an Indians/Tigers game in 97 when the pitcher got hit by the batted ball. Julio Franco, the batter, went to first, then time was called and there was a big delay when the pitcher was checked out and helped off. Herb Score, who got drilled like that during his second season, was calling the game on the radio for the Tribe. He talked a little bit about what that was like. Scary.

The play keeps going until it's "natural" conclusion. The same is true if any player, including a runner or the batter-runner is injured. In fact, if the batter-runner is running out a HR and is injured in the process, he is replaces by a pinch-runner to finish running the bases for him.
The link that I've provided is to the official baseball rulebook. Your scenario is covered within Rule 5, "putting the Ball in Play, Dead Ball and Live Ball (in Play)" .
