There are easier ways for your desktop to your other desktop.
Laptop or desktop doesn't matter. What does matter is what equipment you connect with and what you have available.

You can use a cross over cable and connect them both to your ethernet ports on your desktop or laptop.
You have assign them an ip address in the same subnet and share out a folder then transfer away.

You can also purchase a 4port switch for less then $25.00, that way you can share files with both your desktops and laptop at the same time. You can use straight through cables to your computers for this since your using a switch. Again the same subnet rules apply when you assign your ip addresses.

The easiest way with out doing too much is to buy a router for about the same price. This will assign your ip address for each computer and all you have to do is follow the easy set up wizard.
Then just share out a folder and copy and paster all you wish.

Any of the above methods should take you less than a half hour.

I hope this helps good luck : )

You can try any solution above but I preferred to use the cross-over cable since you only need to connect 2 computers but if your are planning to connect 3 or more computer Switch and Router is the "MAN". But before the cross-over cable works it needs the following:
1. Ethernet Port (Most modern Desktop & Laptops has it)

2. Both desktop & your laptop has the same workgroup
(Just be sure that the Cross-Over cable is already attached to your computer.)
To Check: RIght-Click My-Computer->Properties->Computer Name.
To Change:
Click the Button Change under Computer Name
Tab and key-in your preferred workgroup and click ok. Restart
your computers.

3. Assign IP Address manually to each computer.
To Assign:
Open your Network Connection -> Right-Click
your Ethernet Adapter -> Properties -> Under General Tab
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) be sure it is checked -> Click
the Properties button a window will appear -> under General
tab click 'use the following IP Address' -> assign you
preferred IP address it could be 192.168.0.2 in your desktop
and 192.168.0.3 in your laptop after you key-in your preferred
ip address press Tab or just click on the Subnet Mask and it
will automatically generate the value for you just be sure that
both your desktop and laptop has the same Subnet Mask just
ignore the DNS settings-> click ok -> check both 'Show icon
in notification....' & 'Notify me when this connection...' -> click
close -> restart both computers just to be sure

To check:
LogIn to both computers and in you laptop
Click Start->Run->key-in CMD->In the command prompt key-
in PING 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.2 is the IP address the
you've assigned to your desktop. If you received a reply from
that it means that both your desktop and laptop is now able
to "Talk" to each other. By the way, you can use computer
name instead of IP address. The last thing you have to do is
to share your folder read below.

Share the folder where your music stored.
To share:
Right-CLick the folder -> click Sharing and Secutiry...-> under Sharing tab click the 'Share this folder on the network' -> Click apply -> click ok.

To Copy the Music from the Shared Folder in your desktop:
In your laptop open Network Places or your windows explorer and in the addres bar key-in \\192.168.0.2 to access you desktop and press enter and there you go you now have the Shared folder containing your music just copy it and paste it to anywhere you want it in your laptop.

If you have questions or encounter error/problem in the process of configuration feel free to ask me.
