In order to write a great paper you need at least 5 paragraphs. You also need to follow this very simple plan. It works on every paper no matter how long and if you use this you will give your teachers exactly what they are looking for. 1. Tell them what your gonna tell them. 2. Tell them. 3. Tell them what you told them.
Paragraph 1 is an opening. Tell them what your going to write about. Example..my favorite holiday is ___ because of 1,2, and 3
Paragraph 2 talks about one detail, I like this holiday because of blah blah blah.
paragraph 3 talks about another detail, another thing I like about his holiday is blah blah blah.
paragraph 4 talks about the last detail, the best thing ever about this holiday is blah blah blah
paragraph 5 tells them what you just told them, recap the first 4 paragraphs. Blah, blah and blah are the reasons this holiday is the best to me.

A transition is a sentence used to help a piece flow from paragraph to paragraph. So, for example, if you were writing about Jonas Salk's polio vaccine, and in one paragraph you had to talk about the need for a vaccine and in another you had to talk about its discovery, you could write it like this,
... As the polio crisis gripped the United States, along with other parts of the world, a solution was direly in need. **The answer to this problem came in the form of a New York staff physician: Jonas Salk.**
In leading the Viral Research Lab at the University of Pittsburgh, Salk, a New York University graduate, began tests on an experimental polio vaccine in the early 1950s
I just made that up; still, you can see how a transition nests itself between two ideas and is used to make the change not so abrupt.
So, to write a transition, sit down and write down the two main ideas of the paragraphs between which you want to put a transition. Find some way to lead into that second paragraph. In my example, I gave a problem-solution scenario, and used that to begin the second paragraph easily. Another popular transition writing method is just to sum up the main idea in the previous paragraph, and note that something else is missing (e.g. Though all of these are popular methods of vaccination, scientists have sought a quicker and effective method to vaccinate thousands of African children. - then begin a paragraph on spray vaccines)
So play with it, but remember that, fundamentally, a transition is to put a solid link between two concepts.

Think of a transition as something like an on-ramp on a freeway -- you don't suddenly cut across a lawn to get on a freeway -- you take the ramp to transition smoothly. In an essay, you need to do the same thing. You can use phrases like "For example," "In addition to (reiterate a point you made in a previous paragraph)", or "There is more evidence of this trend" or "This theme continues when. . ." Remember, transitions don't need to be "dramatic." They make your writing flow smoothly. Good luck!

Think of a transition as sort of a bridge between thoughts or ideas that help to connect them to the next thought or idea.
For example, at the end of your 1st paragraph write a sentence that will help connect it to the second paragraph. At the end of the second paragraph write a sentence that will help connect it to the 3rd, and so on.
