Uppsala is a 45 minute train ride north of Stockholm. It is the ancient capital, and the university was established over 800 years ago. The cathedral is beautiful. One can tour Slottet ("the castle"), where the old seat of government was located. The Fyris river has an old mill that you can visit.
Ingmar Bergman's "Fanny and Alexander" was filmed in Uppsala.
Old viking burial mounds and rune stones are south of the city and can be reached by bus (Sweden has a VERY comprehensive public transportation system).
Another place to visit is the old city (little town) of Sigtuna, also south of Uppsala.
If you go in the summer (I don't recommend the winter), you can fly up to Kiruna, north of the Arctic Circle. The largest iron mine in the world is there, and you can take a tour of it. We rented a car and drove in a loop over into Norway (Narvik is a quaint town with a good hostel), up the coast (fjords and ferries) to Tromso, where we saw a presentation about the aurora borealis at the university observatory. We continued through Lappland, down through Finland and back to Kiruna. There were few tourists (except for Swedes and Norwegians).
Students can fly very cheaply in the summer.
