Hi,

I would like to know if anyone knows of a source where I could find out about the weight, size, and mass of the gastrocnemius muscle in various species of animals. Or even other leg muscles would be ok too.

Thanks,

Mike

gastrocnemius is basically the calf muscle. And the only reason I'm asking this is that I'm just curious if there is info like this out there...

The gastrocnemius muscle in a grass frog (Rana pipiens) usually weighs about 1-2 grams, and is about 2-3 cm long. However, it can vary widely, depending on the age, size and physcial condition of the frog. You are more likely to find scholarly articles on the fiber composition of a muscle (there are 3 main types of muscle fiber, characterized by their primary energy metabolism, rate of contraction and rate of fatigue), for example, at google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=gastrocnemius+muscle+weight+in+different+species&btnG=Search. Hope this helps.
