I want to audit my pc and see what Skype generates in terms of network traffic.

Skype is a peer to peer application and can work by relaying traffic from a user ot another via a 3rd pc.

I have Ethereal and use it to trap network packets going in and out, but how do I know which packets are Skype traffic???

This is a very non-trivial task! Skype traffic is encrypted and uses random ports, so it is very difficult to detect, analyze and block. If you're just curious, I suggest that you try something simpler.

Pull up netstat -a , and see which ports your skype install is using, and set your ethereal capture filters to listen to those only those ports (UDP) If you just want to see Skype packets.
(They are encrypted, by the way)

inadequate suggestions are you using switches? Is spanning tree setup? Are they Cisco? if so do you have CDP enabled. that would inform you what switches are related, then you truly evaluate that on your diagram. How huge is your community? tracert would possibly no longer help in case you're a small layer 2 community.
