Eat and drink at the Clevelander in South beach but don't eat next door to them...over priced for the quantity and the quality of food.
Be careful of the hotels in south beach pretty raunchy and over priced. You would do better staying in Miami Beach. check out the Newport Hotel and resort on Collins. Right on the beach, great price, wonderful service, terrific people. Ask if Michelle still works the desk, great black girl from Jamaica maybe.
You can take the bus any where really cheap any there rail system is free all day long stops at midnight.
My husband & I have been there 3 times now from Cleveland. Had a blast everytime.

Miami is among typically the most popular vacation locations and with hotelbye you'll find out more. Miami has anything for all; from the trendy nightlife of South Beach, bejeweled by the attention candy of the Art Deco region up to the bustle of Calle Ocho and the extremely caffeinated power of Little Havana. The Art Deco District brings back thoughts of a youthful time in Florida with its wonderfully restored 1930s Art Deco structures and is just a place effectively visited exactly like Bayside Marketplace. That place is really a big outdoor model mall with increased than 150 niche and tourist shops, numerous cafes and restaurants, and daily live entertainment.

I live in South Beach - and I'm guessing that you will spend your time here because it is the main tourist area.
Firstly, stay here because you can get anything you want 24 hours a day with no cab... just your feet or (until 1 am-ish usually) the South Beach Local ( http://www.miamibeachfl.gov/newcity/sobe_local.asp ) which costs only 25 cents per ride and brings you all the way around south beach!!!
Being here alone I would go to Lincoln Road and people watch - it's between 16th and 17th Streets... Eat the special parma ham pizza at Pizza Rustica, get a gelato at parmalat gelateria. or try posher things along the road like something from Touch, Funktion, Pacific Times (really great but expensive). A lot of them have early evening specials, like beat the clock at Le Bon which has delicious mussels provencale. Elsewhere in SoBe you can try 8 1/2 on Washington between 8th & 9th on the east side... or 51Ocean on ocean drive just north of 5th street. Cheesy but fun drunken times are always at Mango's (with live cuban music and tropical cocktails) and the Cleavelander which are both on Ocean Drive. Breakfast is always best on Ocean Drive at a place called Palace Cafe (quite local).
Rent a scooter and buzz around looking at all the freaky people. Find the bakery on washington ave just north of espanola way on the west side of the street and eat something nice with a coffee. Go to Miami Ink and watch them film tattooing for the TLC program a bit further south on washington. Then go down espanola way (esp at night) for a great "eurpoean" esque scene.
There is a very powerful holocaust memorial on meridian at dade ave (a short walk north from lincoln road)... it's just amazing - go around the back side and through the tunnel to the island with the massive hand sculpture on it.
Try cuban cuisine at David's cafe (Get something nice like bistec de palomilla con arroz, frijoles, maduros, yuca hervida con mojito y una jupina y un cortadito para tomar) the ocean itself really is nice, but you could go to Ocean Drive...
It's always fun to watch the sun rise over south beach while in the water. (sunsets are over the back of the island so it's not so great)
Jazid is fun at night, go to a cool bar like the rose bar at the delano or the bar at the standard for cool drinks and a posh crowd.
Generally people here are snobby, so don't expect to make many friends at least in a short trip, but there are some cool homeless people don't worry. lol. (check out the one on the west side of Washington between Lincoln Road and Espanola Way - she's always along there - with a skull cap on and a fake clip-on pony tail that is sometimes blonde and sometimes brunette)
Fifth Street is cool at night, there are a few buildings there on the corner of washington and collins that change colors... and an evening stroll down washington to the fountians at the tip of the island is super nice. Generally, there is great art deco buildings (hotels, apts, etc) but generally these are only in south beach, though there are a few examples elsewhere. There is even an art deco museum!
There is a super hip restaurant/bar/lounge on Meridian between 5th and 4th St called Xtreme Cafe with locals, great savoury crepes, and a huge selection of beer and wine from around the world.
Cool shopping on Collins betweeen 5th and 8th St (urban outfitters, marc jacobs, MAC, united colours of benetton, blah blah).
Downtown miami (real miami miami) is scary at night -don't go... at the daytime there is some street action on flagler east and west of miami ave... There is a nice museum near that intersection, and the library with a really cool spanish plaza. Then go to south west 8th street by cab (daytime or early evening) and eat at versailles... really great food. Downtown Miami at any hour is fun at the Bayside mall - it's touristy and cute with the skyline behind and the bay in front with yachts parked all the way along it.
Excurions - well, try Sawgrass Mall for a massive shopping center and the famous clam chowder at Legal Seafoods, the Everglades, Aventura Mall, Parrot Jungle, a play or opera at the new carnival cruise performing arts complex... Ft. Lauderdale's Las Olas blvd is nice...
Anything you can't find here, you can get in any tourist guide, or better yet, try the visitor's center on Meridian at Dade blvd. That is just across the street from the holocaust memorial.
I am 23 and have learned these things since i moved here after katrina - i'm from new orleans originally.
