A wrist strap can help lock your wrist in place so that you can have a more consistant release. With a more consistant release your scores should improve.

A wrist strap can help you cup the ball especially if you have weak wrists. The result is more lift, more revolutions, more hook, more power, etc. Again things that can raise your score.

And as everyone else said a wrist strap can help prevent injury by reducing the amount of strain on your wrist.

The latter, but it can also serve as a prop to intimidate your opponent. (He must be a pro, he's wearing a wrist strap!)
