If its cracked yes its a failure, to all the doubters who may think they know what their talking about please recheck the sign on the garage wall.
The test includes tires AND wheels.
If you genuinely feel the garage is coming it you can appeal to VOSA, the test agency. Best way to do this is to get your car tested elsewhere and then state to VOSA what the previous tester failed it on. You can get an appeal form online from VOSA. (just google it)
I doubt however the tester is trying it on, if he was going to fail it on something to get work it would be more likely to be something mechanical you cant see.

A cracked wheel is an accident waiting to happen.
The stress on your wheels when you scream round the streets breaking the speed limits mean the when could break at any time.
A wheel may not be part of the testing of an MOT BUT, if there is a dangerous part of your car then they ARE required to make the call as to whether it is drive-able or not.
You were lucky that you were allowed to drive it home with a wheel in that state.
If you cannot afford to get another alloy wheel new, get one from a breakers (a tip for bringing an alloy back to shiny look is use cooking foils and soft detergent on it.
If this doesn't appeal to you, get a set of steels and nice covers.
For safetys sake - don't continue driving with a cracked wheel

Very difficult, take the wheel off, clean it thoroughly and take it backto the garage what failed it and demand they show you the crack, if they cant demand a free retest, take the right wheel.
Cracks are awkward sods, I took the manifold off my MG to weld the crack but it was a casting flaw not a crack, I needed a jewellers eyeglass to check it.
If the wheel is cracked scrap the whole set, losing a wheel is no fun. my friend lost one at 25 MPH it nearly went through the front door of the pub, BMW motorbike wheels suffered fatigue and a number failed in the 70s and 80s, you cant mend stressed alloy, covers are OK but not wheels.
Remember a wheel loss accident is completely luck related as to its severity, braking from 90 it probably aint survivable, and if you have Magnesium Alloys more than 10 years old, dont use them, fit them for shows and use some steels between shows.

Answer from Carla:
"Wrong , Wrong , wrong , wrong , If you look at the rules that are set down which each garage must follow to complete an Mot then you will notice that Alloy Wheels ar NOt I repeat Not part of the MOt. So there is no way it should have failed take it back and insist on a retest and for them to do it correctly this time and stop trying to scam you >
Appeal , Appeal ,Appeal , Appeal , YOu will win they are wrong theyve got it wrong its NOT part of the MOT . If the tyre itself isnt faulty then a comestic part such as a alloy shouldnt be taken into consideration as its cosmetic and nothing to do with the running of the vehicle "
Are you seriously saying that just because a wheel is made of an alloy rather than steel it makes it a "cosmetic" fitting "and nothing to do with the running of the vehicle"? The whole idea of the MOT is that the vehicle is SAFE.A cracked wheel, whether it be alloy, steel or wood is UNSAFE.Therefore it is a failure!

ERMM PUT A SPARE ON!!! either that or take it to an wheel specialist and have it repaired... i dont see why it should have failed on a cracked alloy lol, if your wheel is cracked you WILL have a flat tyre as not matter how big that crack its releasing air from the tyre.... id go back and tell him that, and to the "MOT TESTER" (cowboy) who said mot stations have there own minimum standards.... well sorry to burst ur bubble but no they dont, MOT is a national thing that EVERY car on a british road MUST have or it is bound illeagal and must not be on the road, therefore EVERY car must be treated the same and must meet the "NATIONAL" requirements of VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) and you are entitled to a full explanation and can be show the failure if requested... http://www.vosa.gov.uk/

Hi there,
WHEELS are part of the MOT test, steel or alloy and as someone already has said MOT stations have a set down minimum standard to adhere too and 1 standard is cracks in wheels. visit www.motester.co.uk/cog.html this has the MOT testers guide set out in it's simplest form and is very helpfull.
Good Luck

If you think you are being swindled, take your car to another testing station. If they discover the same fault ask them to point out the crack. It is possible to repair cracked alloys but it will probably be easier and cheaper to get a 2nd hand one off a scrapper.

Why not go back to the mot station and ask were the crack is , they have by law to point the fault out, if they cannot and its the only fauliure you can then tell them if they can not give a satisfactury answer that you will apeal , that will consontrate their minds if they cannot explain

Some off the people have said they can't believe it failed for that my wife's car failed for having one of those smelly things hanging from the rear view mirror they said it obstructed the view
PS the rear view mirror is in fact technically not allowed as it was an add on by one off the car firms and did not get permission but as it helps slightly the powers that be left alone.
