I have been in the business since 1967. My advice for you is to look up the maker first of all ( go to a book store and check the trademarks in one of their books) or try similar makers on eBay search and get a value there. Remember that anything is only worth what a person is willing to pay. Never mind if you get a high appraisal it may not bring what they think it should. Also if something is old it does not mean it has value at all. You can have kitchen china from the late 1800's and it still would be just that. But if you have flow blue china from the late 1800's now you are talking money even when these were "seconds" in their time.

Your local bookstore...

Go to the hobby section and look for the antiques books...

Almost everything you need is listed in Kovels.

Or... you can find an item specific kind of book like ceramics, porcelain ect... They have them.

I just found a plate the other day at a flea market the guy had a $4.00 sticker on it and I asked him if I could have it for $2 and he said okay... It has a poppy on it too! My favorite!

It is very old prussian porcelain and worth over $110.00. Cool Huh?

Found it in my Kovels book!
