Impeachment does not mean removal from office.

It means that you are being investigated, officially, for misconduct in the carrying-out of your duties, as sworn, when you took office.

I'm not entirely sure that Nixon ever reached the "impeachment" stage, or if he resigned right before it. I seem to remember that he was never "officially" impeached, but that it was forthcoming.

Anyway, the basis of the scandal was regarding an illegal break-in into the Democratic national campaign headquarters, located in the Watergate Hotel, in Washington D.C. It seems that President Nixon was at least a knowing consenting party to the break-in, although, of course, he did not participate in it personally.

In addition, Nixon had a curious habit of tape-recording most of his telephone conversations and meetings. Many of these recordings incriminated him in this matter, as it placed him in conversations about this criminal break-in. No one has ever been able to say, however, that he devised the plot, or even approved of it, actually. He simply consented to having it carried out, or at best, failed to stop it.

He wasn't. They were preparing a Bill of Impeachment when he resigned.

The whole thing was because of the Watergate break-in. Short version: burglars in the employ of the Committee To Re-Elect the President (CREEP) broke into, and bugged, the offices of the Democratic National Committee located in the Watergate in Washington D. C. It turned out some of Nixon's key advisors and even the Attorney General John Mitchell were aware the break-in was going to take place. This was all done with Nixon's blessing. Nixon lied to Congress, to the American people and to anyone else who would listen about his complicity in the burglary. Investigations showed that Nixon knew a lot more than he was willing to admit. Congressional hearings into the matter dragged on for several years until Nixon advisor John Dean blew the whistle on the whole thing. Nixon advisors John Ehrlichmann and Howard Hunt spent time in prison as did Dean. Attorney General John Mitchell was forced to resign and spent time in prison. And, in the middle of the whole thing - in an unrelated matter - Vice President Spiro Agnew was forced to resign for income tax evasion while Governor of Maryland. He also went to prison.

Nixon unlike Clinton was NEVER impeached. Nixon unlike Clinton resigned from office rather than put the country thru an impeachment hearing.

Go find the book "All the President's Men" by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Any library ought to have it. It is the factual account of the downfall of Nixon, written by the two people who broke the Watergate story. There also is a movie version, but it isn't as good as the book.

he wasnt impeached. the only sitting president to be impeached is William Jefferson Clinton. Nixon was threatened to be impeached because of the break in over one file from Daniel Ellsburgs office. 937 files from the RNC were in Hillary Clintons closet in the White House personal quarters and nothing was done as she just couldnt remember how they got there.

He was never actually impeached. What are our lovely teachers teaching you guys?? He resigned before the impeachment. It was the Water Gate scandal that caused his resignation.
