Sorry for not clarifying myself better: I received a Creative Zen Nano Plus for Christmas and I think I'd rather use this one instead of sending it back cross country .......... is there any universal software or such that will allow me to install files to this thing? I'm sure I can burn the files(music) to a c.d. then run the supplied software disc on a separate PC .......... get my dilemma?

No, iPod isn't the ONLY mp3 player to work with a Mac. Just ask questions, just about the time you get ready to give up, you'll figure it out. Zen Nano wouldn't show up on the desktop, at all on mine. Try a different USB port than the one you're using. None of the ports on my keyboard worked no matter what I did, the one on my CPU did .......... try it.

Sometimes you can't get front door to open, but you can always go around back and kick the sucker in ........... (think about it)

not at all-but it is the only mp3 player that will work with apple's online store (iTunes). Other mp3 players merely act like a portable hard drive would, appearing on the desktop and allowing you to drag and drop music files onto them. Some even come with proprietary software that you can load onto your computer, but be sure to check compatibility requirements on the box before you assume it will work on a mac.
