How old are you, not younger than 16 I hope?
Yes, your Mother should be able to come in with you.
The one instrument is not big and painful. It is chrome and cold.
It will gently stretch open you vaginal canal. Slightly uncomfortable when you aren't a mature sexually active lady.
Then the Doctor checks inside to see if anything is out of order or if you have any std or discharge that doesn't belong.
DO NOT DOUCHE. The Doctor needs to know if you have any discharge or what is causing it. If you douche he cannot diagnose any problems.
I was 17 when I took myself for the first time. Mostly it makes you nervous and embarrassed.
You will do fine. Good luck and Happy New Year.

i had mine today
it did actually kind of hurt to be honest
are you getting a rectal exam as well?
I had to get one done too which doesnt hurt as much or at all.
the gyn is gonna ask for you to get naked and all and you will wear a hospital gown
she will put your legs apart into like stirrups (like ure having a baby)
and first check the outer area then the inner
your doctor will first insert 2 fingers and then a speculum and such
the speculum looks scary and painful and it kind of is
well it was for me
its not always so painful though
they will take a pap smear and all that crap
how old are you?
don't be so scared its just very uncomfortable and kinda painful.
the rectal exam is nothing your on ure stomach but first you will have a suppository inserted so you can empty out bowels or maybe an enema and then you will lie on your stomach and your doctor will stick in a finger and then a tube to check out some stuff
dont be so worried its not tht painful
your mom can come with you if you want

Whether your mother can come in or not will be up to your ob/gyn, most will allow it (it's actually good for them from a liability point of view, and doctors want you to be as comfortable as possible with the tests we need to do).
A pelvic exam itself is uncomfortable, and socially awkward, to say the least, but it should not be painful, if something is really hurting during the exam, I would let your ob/gyn know, he (or she) is probably doing everything he can to avoid causing pain.

I'm proud of you for getting such an important exam despite your fears. You must be a very strong young woman!
To answer your question, there is more embarassment than pain involved in the process. There will be a sheet over your legs for modesty's sake. The doctor will always have another person in the room .. a nurse ... to make sure there are no problems for you. Make sure you tell them this is your first one!
You can get details for your first pelvic exam on CoolNurse.com, here, http://www.coolnurse.com/pelvic_exams.htm.
It will all be over quickly....about two minutes...and it will be the best two minutes you can invest in yourself. As embarassing as the test can be, it is far easier than chemotherapy....trust me on this one. I am a cancer survivor and VERY glad it was found early through such testing.

To take down your nervousness so that you can actually lie back and relax during this exam, (or for any other exam, for that matter) download the free "Get Started Package" for the energy therapy called Emotional Freedom Techniques. You can learn it in an hour or less, and then do the 'tapping' tomorrow if you are still feeling any anxiety. It truly works. Go here to download it:

Don't worry, after this one, you'll need to do it every year and it becomes just like any other exam. It's really nothing, just a 5 minute exam. It is only uncomfortable and not painful unless you have a condition, but your doctor will do his/her best to make sure you're ok. Don't get riled up about it at all, it will be fine!

Your mom should be able to come with you if you want her to. It is kind of scarey the first time. I still hate getting them, but it is necessary. It won't hurt, but maybe a little uncomfortable. Just take deep breaths and think about something other than what's going on down there and it will be over before you know it.

Pelvic examination is not so scary. All instruments are harmless to the patient. Yes, your Mum can accompany you, but it depends upon hospital policy and your age.

It doesn't hurt but it's uncomfortable. Your mum can come with you if you want. The best thing is to relax and remember it's a temporary situation.
