Films like Irreversible, Hard Candy, Mysterious skin, and Happiness etc are considered "controversial". Can anyone suggest any other good ones?

This list includes movies of different generes and times (The oldest is from the 70's), but all are considered to be controversial in film circles. I saw most of these and consider them to be good, (except Salo, Caligula, and Pink Flamingos, which I found disgusting).

Memento (very interesting)
Mullholland Drive
American History X
Old Boy (Warning: Its got some violence and its in Japanese)
In the Mouth of Madness
Crash
A Clockwork Orange
Lolita
KIDS
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and her lover
Requium for a Dream
The Da Vinci Code (Only Controversial in some crowds)
Boys Dont Cry
Crying Game
Rosemary's Baby
Midnight Cowboy
The Last Temptation of Christ
Salo, Baise Moi (French), Pink Flamingos and Caligula (Fair Warning: These four are disgusting)

Barret hit the nail on the head, Kids & Requiem for a Dream are two of the best films ever.
Elephant is controversial but I didn't exactly find it good.
Bowling for Columbine - Fahrenhiet 9/11
The Warriors
Deep Throat
The Passion of the Christ
Natural Born Killers (and about anything Tarantino or Stone)

"Triumph of the Will" is probably the most controversial film ever

Some of the most controversial involve real animal murder and torture such as Cannibal Holocaust or Cannibal Ferox.

Or if you want to see what Siskel and Ebert called "the worst piece of garbage ever made" check out the ultra-violent I Spit On Your Grave (featuring a 30 minute explicit rape scene)

For something newer, anything directed by Takashi Miike is usually controversial. I reccomend Gozu, Visitor Q and Audition.

Anything by David Kronenburg, the most controversial of which being Crash, which is about a group of people who discover they have a sexual fetish for car accidents. Very strange stuff and as James Spader is in it, you know its dodgy controversial goodness.

Speaking of Spader, Secretary is a notable one, due to its self harm scenes and the sexual nature that is explored in it.

American History X
Malcolm X
Mississippi Burning
