Reformatting is easy. The hard part is reinstalling everything when you're done. First, try reinstalling XP without reformatting. That way you won't wipe out all the drivers and all your software.
You'll have to boot off the XP install disk or a rescue disk if you want to reformat.

Oooh, $150??? What a major ripoff. That company deserves to be shot for even telling you that!

You can get a brand new copy of Windows XP Professional for almost that much these days!

Search around at more places, and particularly the mom & pop shops in your area. You're bound to find someone who is willing to look at it for a cheap fee. You shouldn't have to reformat anything unless Windows is infected. And like the others said, if it's a branded PC, call the manufacturer for support if it's still under warranty.

Use the recovery disc that is branded by your computer manufacturer that will reformat and reinstall windows XP on it, definitely don't pay for that. or you could try system restore in HElp and support to try and bring your comp back to when it was working fine.
