Electroencephalography (EEG) records brain waves, but it doesn't read minds or measure IQs. Instead, it's used to detect the level of electrical activity in the brain. Your brain cells communicate by electrical impulses, and an EEG measures and records these electrical impulses to detect anything abnormal.

An EEG measures primarily grey matter or higher brain function. The largest part of the brain is comprised of the cerebrum, which is split into right and left hemispheres. The cerebrum controls voluntary actions, thought, speech, and memory. In humans, the cerebrum comprises most of the brain, while in other mammals it's relatively small. This allows us to perform much more complicated actions than other species can.

The outer layer of the cerebrum, called the cerebral cortex, is responsible for most higher brain functions such as thought, reasoning, memory, and voluntary muscle movement. The cerebral cortex is mostly made up of neurons, which are nerve cells that carry message

I can`t work out why you need to stay awake, just because you are having an EEG in the morning, unless of course it is to measure your brain function after sleep deprivation? I would not drink too much of that Red Bull or Red Rooster stuff, it is very gassy, you will be `burping` all day to-morrow ! Coffee is better it has the caffeine without the gas. If you start to feel sleepy, go outside to the garden where it is cold for ten minutes. Clean the fridge or the cooker. If all else fails, stay on Ya.hoo! As a night owl, I can tell you there are people on here all night long.

Avoid the caffeine after 1 or 2 am as it will influence your EEG readings... Try to find several fast-paced novels in a series (like the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice), and read all night. Take frequent walks outside in the cold. Listen to some perky music. Watch all the movies in a series in the same night (like "The Lord of the Rings," "Back to the Future," "Star Wars"). I had problems sleeping once while switching to the night shift, and stayed up all night by watching DVDs of Monty Python's Flying Circus.

I used to volunteer at a San Francisco hospital where they'd keep the patients up all night to help induce seizures. Most often they'd emlpoy the help of a family member who'd be in charge of shaking the patient if their eyes started to droop. We'd give them a pile of videos to watch and keep the lights on in the room. If you'll have access to a computer, staying here and answering questions would be a way to keep your mind occupied and off thoughts of sleep.

I wish you the best of luck! It's no fun staying up all night if it's not at a party.

I cannot understand the need for you to stay awake but the best thing to keep you awake is anger. Go and do something which will upset someone, then you can have an argument about it. I guarantee you won't sleep.

try taking a cold shower in the morning, doing a few exercises (not enough to tire yourself out) and have a good breakfast (something with sugars to boost your energy and carbs to keep it going). Hope it helps

I know all about that.EEG electrical impulses.when your in alpha sleep your at 28 cycles.when you sleep you go to other levels theta . and delta. beta is where your at now.to stay awake for a long time. you need to train yourself to go to alpha level without actually falling to sleep.I have stayed awake for a week by going to alpha level for a while every four hours.you just dream but stay awake to a degree. so you don't go to other levels.theta is where the body heals itself by the Way.the brain tell the t cells where to go to heal and nourish the body. Its all very complex.so learn to go to alpha state and stay there for half hour every four hours.though you need the other states . its OK for a week to not actually get a full nights sleep.Peace.
