To find out your WPM (words per minute), you actually should do 3 different runs to average and get the most accurate reading. The WPM measurement is based upon accuracy also, so all non-accurate words are counted in the description with a percent accuracy.

The way to do it is this. Cut and paste 300 words from a story that does not have lots of numeric or special characters. I suggest you avoid quotes and dashes and other punctuation like that. Have somebody time you or have the computer clock on the corner of your screen to you can stop at the right time.

When you get the "Go", start typing as fast and accurately as possible. Continue for 2 minutes. Look very carefully at what you have typed and count the inaccurate words. You can do a FILE/PROPERTIES to get a count of all of the words.

Do the same test again.

Do the same test again.

This will give you three results.

Now lets work on the measuring.

You did 2 minutes, so lets assume you did the following.

Test 1 - 128 words with 4 incorrect
Test 2 - 133 words with 7 incorrect
Test 3 - 132 words with 3 incorrect

So add all the words up (128 + 133 + 132 = 393) and divide by six minutes (2 minutes per test) to arrive at 65.5 WPM). But you still have to consider the accuracy so we add all the incorrect words (4 + 7 + 3 = 14) and divide that number by the total words or 14 / 393 = 3.56% incorrect, so your percentage of correct words is 100 - 3.56 or 96.44% accuracy. So when you say your WPM, the correct way would be to say:
"I type 65 WPM with 96.4% accuracy."

You can type for a minute and count all the words and divide this by 1. Your wpm typing rate will be the amount of words.

What you may want to do is type for a minute. Count how many words you have in the first line. Assume all lines have this many. Then the wpm is = (amount of words in first line) times (number of lines)

Say you wnat to be more accurate: You may type for more than one miunte, say 5 minutes. Now your wpm = (amount of words in first line) times (number of lines) divided by 5 minutes.

But say you want to be even more accurate. Type for 5 minutes. Look for a few "typical" lines. Find the average amount of words in these lines. (example: words in line1+line2+line3 divided by 3).

Now your wpm = (average words in a line) times (number of lines) divided by 5 minutes.

For a ONE minute test, every 5 characters (including spaces and punctuation) equals one word. That equals your gross words a minute (gwam).
Example: I can type very quickly and make lots of errors, or I can type more slowly and make fewer errors. (This would be 19 words a minute if it took ONE minute to type it.)
