The two best-known societies in ancient Greece were the Spartans, and the Athenians. The two cultures were very different from each other but both contributed ideals that modern man still uses today.
The most obvious difference between the Athens and Sparta is its ancestry. The Spartans were descendents of the Dorian invaders, while the Athenians were of Ionian descent. Both city-states faced a turning point in their history, and each on was regarding slavery. The turning point for Athens were the laws given by Solon.

Roughly Athens was the center of the new world "modern society" about 3500 years B.C. Athens was the "place to be" for great scholars, thinkers, theologians and mathematicians. They all came to Athens, for the forum, the theater.
Sparta on the other hand was still a great society and a leader of theologians, the center for a great society on the rise. But, not in the same sense as Athens, the beauty in the marble statues we see today yet. Etc.
This was all ended we thought but now, we have a good idea much of it was true, the Trojan wars which lasted for about 12 years. It all but destroyed the Spartans and all but bankrupted the Greek kings who simply fell on bad times over the wars. Not much is known about the society today, we know little about the Civil war of 1865 just 150 years ago, therefore what happen for sure 7 or 8 thousand years ago is merely speculation. Homers Iliad of the Trojan wars is thought to be merely speculation but now with new findings, we'll have to wait and see,

Athens was a commercial "democratic" state - but note - the majority of the inhabitants were legally slaves -slavery in the Ancient World being very different from the forced agricultural gang labour experienced in the United States. Many Athenian "slaves" were highly educated, and these often prospered. However the wealth and power of Athens was based on trade and commerce, and it had a purely maritime empire.
Sparta was a military dictatorship based on agriculture, and was dominated by an aristocratic class in which all males were trained from birth for combat - and all girls taught to support them. The majority of the population were "helots" - a form of slavery usually associated with primitive agriculture. These unfortunates were rarely, if ever, educated. Sparta had a much smaller empire than Athens, and it was land based.
