VERY very loosely based on an actual event. However the depiction of the "truth" in the movie is nowhere near what actually happened. For instance, the killer did not use a "chainsaw" and did not kill like nearly as many people as shown in the film. Don't let the faux-documentary at the beginning fool you, this movie is pretty fake.

It is loosly based on the story of Ed Gein, who used to live in Wisconson, not Texas. And a chainsaw was never actually used, Gein used a gun to kill his victems. But the furniture and house decorations made of human body parts was true, as was the human skin mask. Norman Bates from Psycho was also based on Gein with his obsession with his mother and penchant for cross-dressing.

No. Tobe Hooper did get some ideas from Ed Gein, a Wisconsin grave robber and murderer, but the original inspiration came when he was in a hardware store and saw the chainsaws on display

it is inspired by the story of Ed Gein.Aucually they did not use a chainsaw, their was no leatherface, and it didnt even happen in texas.the story of Ed Gein inspired the movie.Ed gein was a crazy man with was believed to hear his dead mother talking to him.Itr is said that his mom told him to hate ladies and to kill them.the only real and comparible thing between the movie and the real senario is the mass murders, the horrid messy macabre house, and the spooky story of a crazed man.And if you think their are 4 or 5 different versions of the movie.

yes and no.
there was no crazy cannibal family that hunted teens in texas. this was based on wisconsin serial killer ed gein, who killed woomen and made masks, lamps and funiture out of thier skin. don't let anyone try to tell you there was a "texas" connection, look ed gein up on wikipidia and you will find out there..
psycho, and silence of the lambs were based on him as well.

It's based on actual events. They say it's really based on Ed Gein but I don't see alot of similarities. My dad also told me it was real. He said it was going on when he lived in Texas, but only god knows...

It was loosely based on actual events, but like anything else, Hollywood had to glam it up and add horrific details to it to make money.
