One lap is from one side to the other.
In a short course pool, this is 25 yards
In a long course pool (like in the Olympics) it's 50 meters

1 lap is one way across the pool from wall to wall because the lap counters go 1,3,5,7,9...not 1,2,3,4,5. So when you swim across, back, and across again the lap counter says you're on lap 3. I've been swimming competitively for 13 years and after that long a one way lap just makes more sense. I've never heard anyone call 500Y shortcourse a 10 Lap race, it just sounds ridiculous, at least on the west coast.

Technically, A lap is down and back. A length is one direction. However, often people (non-swimmers) use the terms interchangeably.
