A laptop under $500 will limit the amount of cutting edge stuff you will have on it. You will probably have to make due with basic amounts of memory and hard disk, and no fancy bells and whistles. Still it can be done. Check out the link below - they had sixteen models between $400-500 when I checked.

You can also look at BestBuy or some other computer megastore for "refurbished" laptops. These are ones that are not so modern, but are certified to work and are not too expensive.

There are some people that say that this is too cheap--don't listen to them. I bought a Compaq Presario Notebook for $599.00, and it is great. For someone (like me) who just wants to go on the internet, use microsoft office, and is on a budget, a cheap one is fine. I'm not a gaming fiend, so I don't really care about the huge amounts of memory, etc. Go with what you can afford. No matter how much you spend on a computer, it will be obsolete in a few years, so either way, to me a computer is a "short term" investment.

Check out the big furniture stores, etc., Best buy for options.

save your money. Buying a laptop for under $500 is a bad idea. I just bought an HP dv6000 laptop a month ago for $1,200 and i'm VERY happy with it.

I purchased a used dell c600 for less than $400 and love it. You can go to their site and see what they have available for refurbished laptops. Don't believe the hype, a remanufactured system is better than a new one. This time they actually had to look to see what was wrong, rather than slap it together and ship out a non-working one. You can also check out the best prices at http://www.pricewatch.com and http://www.geeks.com Hope this helps and Happy New Year.

go for a pentium III or 4. I got a IBM 600e for $100 and souped it up. That's Pentium II and it works great. Go for any IBM thinkpad, all are great PCs.
