MY cousin was taking anti depressants, and got pregnant. She went to a seminar regarding the use of using her kind of anti depressants and the effect on an unborn child. She was told that it wouldn't harm the fetus. She stayed on it throughout the pregnancy and even while nursing, and trust me...that baby is as healthy as can be.

There are some anti-depressants which are considered safe to take during pregnancy. I took Zoloft, which my psychiatrist told me has plenty of scientific data showing it's safe during pregnancy. I also took other anti-depressants, but only under the care of my psychiatrist!

TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE YOU TRY TO GET PREGNANT! Don't wait until you're already pregnant because many medications that are unsafe during pregnancy will have their worst effect during the first weeks.

At the end of your pregnancy, you may be told to cut down on your dosage to avoid serotonin withdrawal in your newborn. This can cause irritability, even less sleep than normal, lack of ability to eat/gain weight in your baby.

Once again, see your doctor to make sure your pregnancy is as safe as possible for your baby, and safe for you, mentally and physically!

I am on antidepressANTS and am working on getting pregnant with my second child while still taking it and an anti-psychotic(I have bipolar disorder). It depends on how severe your depression is whether you should be taken off, or left on the meds thru pregnancy. Most psychoactive meds are not rated AT ALL one way or the other for use during pregnancy b/c pharmaceuticals don't want to risk the research on pregnant women. Talk to your dr, and see what s/he says.

There are several antidepressants you can take safely while pregnant - I know prozac is one of them - check with your doctor if this would be ok for you...Be sure (prior to becoming pregnant) to be taking neo natal vitamins and talk with your doctor/therapist about your intentions of becoming pregnant. I became pregnant while on effexor and didn't know it at the time, although I had told my primary care physician I was trying to conceive . As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I stopped medicating myself, w/o dr knowledge - not recommended! I was prepared for a roller coaster ride, so to speak, in terms of my mood while pregnant. Much to my surprise, I was is a great mood, no symptoms of depressions at all for my entire pregnancy and it wasn't until a year post partum that I needed medication for my depression. Just be open and honest with all your physicians AT ALL TIMES. Pay close attention to your mood and level of depression and don't be afraid to ask for the help if you need it... my baby is now 2 and am on Celexa. Safe to use while breastfeeding since I am still doing so. So in the end, my advice is talk to your medical professionals. There are medication options for depression if you are trying to have a baby. Good luck to you!

Are you ready to come off your medication? Please speak to your doctor about this and talk about reducing the dosage you are on, is there any rush to have a baby? if you are susceptible to depression anyway a baby will only make it worse, the hormones involved in pregnancy are incredibly Strong, take it from me, i suffered from depression after i had a baby and 7yrs later i am still struggling to come of the pills. Your doctor is the safest route to take at this time. Good luck.

If you are seriously depressed I would recommend getting the depresion under control first. If you are taking them for another reason, like, bi-polar, then I recomend talking to your doctor. There are safe anti-depressants you can take while pregnant. Good luck to you.

i don't think that people with depression can "cure" themselves as someone said. i think you have to learn to control it. until you feel like you can control it whether this is by medication or alternative methods such as exercise which is a brilliant natural form of anti depresant put it on hold. i say this because if your mind is not stable yet having a baby will apply more pressure and anxiety.good luck

Is there a reason you want a baby, as being depressed i would seriously consider getting better first.Babies dont make you happy.they are hard work and it's very emotional (I have 2) if anything it might make your depression worse. But if it's what you want go to the doctor they will prescribe something suitable.good luck..

Depends which antidepressants you take.

I have been taking Paroxetine (Seroxat or Paxil) for several years and my Doctor told me to continue taking it throughout my pregnancy because the withdrawal symptoms made me really ill. I reduced the dose slightly.

My son was born 5 weeks ago and he is absolutely fine! The antidepressants have had no bad effect on him at all!

Talk to your doctor...always. If you are on anti-depressants you are surely seeing one. They can give you the best medical advice. They have your info and have been monitoring your depression/meds... I think your doctors answer will be the best.
