Only the original author knows for sure. Perhaps it's reflective of life and death coming full circle.
Personally, it's one of my favorite works. And if you haven't noticed, I believe this type of character (Beowulf himself) is the reason why we have fictional characters with superhuman strength (i.e. - Superman, the Hulk, and the never-ending pantheon of superheroes). Oh, and I'm sure other folklore and mythology had hands in it, too.

when i wrote my paper i took it from the "every life has a setting and rising period" the fact that funerals open and close the poem reveal that cycle of human life. It can also be used as a "even the greatest must perish", hence giving meaning to death.
