If the answer guy weren't such a left-wing bigot, he'd be close to right. Southerners correctly saw that the political tide was against them, and the Bill of Rights was only going to protect them from political and economic depredations of the north (with its larger population) only when it suited the north, and the previous agreements delineated in the Constitution were no longer going to be followed, so they felt it best to go their own way, with a looser constitution that wouldn't threaten them.
You'll note that some African-Americans still think they should be paid reparations. A better legal case, though not with the same moral force, could be made for southerners who were deprived of their slaves without compensation.

The election of Abraham Lincoln as President.
Seven cotton states decided on secession after the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. They formed the Confederate States of America. In 1861, they were joined by four more states

South Carolina was the first to secede, on December 20th, 1860.

The South wanted freedom from Exploitation by the Rich North.
Except for the Indians, the South were the last people to fight for freedom from a Strong Central Federal Government.
(Cotton tariffs, etc. Slavery wasn't the main issue. The slaves weren't granted freedom until the latter part of the war.)

Conservative hysteria.

The lunatic right-wing fringe which ruled the south and still does today imagined that Lincoln was going to take away their slaves, when in fact he never had any intention of doing so until AFTER the southerners committed treason and attacked America.

The same type of loony hysteria prevails among right-wingers today. Just look at the NRA and how many simpletons they have brainwashed into believing the government is about to take away their guns.
