I don't know about the United States, but here in Australia they had to pack up and leave. Within their first week they got a reputation for the most unsafe cars on the road, not to mention ALL the motoring associations and magazines slammed the cars they were rolling out for their lack of saftey features such as air bags, crumple zones etc, and the cars complete lack of power. I drove one once and it took about 60 seconds to go from 60 Km/h to 100 km/h. When you are trying to merge onto a busy highway, this is not just scary when you can't reach speed. It is dangerous.

Since closing up shop here the resale value of these crappy little cars has decreased so much that most people just give them away or take them to the wreckers.

Very interesting citation from Wikipedia. Apparently they have been pulled and re-badged across the globe.

Daewoo Motors
For specific Daewoo vehicle models, see Category:Daewoo vehicles
Daewoo Motors arrived in the UK in 1995. At the time, it was the only manufacturer not using traditional dealerships; it owned and operated its own retail network. It was once considered to be near the top 10 motor companies in terms of production.

Daewoo was forced to sell off its automotive arm, Daewoo Motors, to General Motors by the Kim administration. Since then, GM has been moving to rebadge Daewoo cars as the low-end models for many brands, including Chevrolet. GM was sued by Daewoo's former U.S. dealer network over this practice, since they no longer had new Daewoo cars to sell.

Daewoo commercial vehicles division was sold to Tata Motors of India.

There are probably many reasons. A major one may be Daewoo's inability/failure to create a strong brand identity in the consumer's mind. How many people know the brand and identify it with a particular product?

Other brands are known for being reliable, tough, environment friendly, safe, etc. What's the Daewoo niche?

Daewoo is well known for forklifts, and they are really fantastic forklifts at that!! Too bad they go faster then the cars they built.

I guess people want a huge "tank" of a vehicle so that they can feel safe. Gas mileage just isn't important for people who want safety...plus....the daewoo car has a poor engine, and no resale value. If your looking for a poorly built mini car with amazing gas mileage, buy an old firefly, sprint, or swift.....good engine, 60mpg for the manual trans.

Daewoo was absorbed by Chevrolet. In countries such as the UK, a majority of the Chevrolet line are rebadged Daewoos. This has only recently started in the U.S., with Daewoo returning in the form of the Chevrolet Aveo.
