Turbo + Computer + Hypercast engine internals + lightened valves (stopping these in 07???)+ lower compression (to allow for higher boost)....
The STI (the "I" is now capatolized) also has several other important upgrades:
-DCCD for handling
-Lightened suspension components (handling)
-Brembo 4 pot brakes in front and 2 pot in rear
-18 inch BBS wheels to clear those huge brakes
-Some VERY good summer tires
-intercooler spray (more power in hot running)
All in all, if you can afford it, the STI is well worth the extra money.

The short block on the WRX and STI are the same since the 06 models. In terms of differences for the engine, the heads are different the wrx maintain the same heads from the 02-05, thus keeping the same size injectors, the turbo on the wrx is still the 13t whereas the STI has a vf39. However the biggest factor contributing to the power difference is the factory tune of the car, the 06 wrx is capable of the same power as the sti simply through an ecutek reflash or utec tune. They had water-down the WRX to give people a reason to buy the STI. But also, the STI has a different suspension, brembos, 6speed transmission (actually capable of handling higher power, unlike the wrx 5 speed which has been known to fail once you pass 280ish tq).

properly you will get a WRX and improve is as you go. STi rather a lot comes is a race vehicle out of the field. I very almost bought a WRX yet i'm saving for the STi because of the fact there is not something like an 04-07 STi.

The primary difference is the turbocharger & the boost pressure. (Bigger Turbocharger=more lag+more power output) Common feedback is less turbo lag in the WRX. Although the STI has a higher engine power output.
Another difference is the transmission system. The STI comes with a 6 speed gearbox while the WRX comes with the normal 5 speed gearbox. The STI is also eqquiped with an electronic controlled centre differential. Named as DCCD.
By the way STI stands for Subaru Technica International. They are a performance arm of Subaru. Just like Ralliart of Mitsubishi.
Go for the STI. It is definitely a better buy. Also look out for the limited edition Subaru WRX S204. 300BHP in stock condition.S204 is loaded with Prodrive performance goodies. Worth to check out more.

The STI is a modified version of the WRX done by prodrive. It also has more horsepower and torque which results in better acceleration. Thus the STI's 0-60 is 4.9s compared to 5.3s for the WRX.The turbo is also stroked up which results in more lag.

Basically the WRX is fast but the sti is faster so if u are looking for a car that packs a powerful punch and looks good while it is fast go with the STi if u are looking for a car that looks good but not too powerful for family purposes then go for the WRX.

the tuning and turbo boost is what adds the power.
The STI is worth the money though, you can choose to make it full rear wheel drive or leave it at the normal split or any combination.
