How do I identify a worker ant from the others?

I have recently purchased an ant colony kit from the toy shop for my son and we have caught some ants however, they do not appear to be doing any work.

Do they have 'royalty' to serve? If not, and you're providing the food, there's not much for them to do.

Won't work if there isn't a queen ant there for them to work for. May as well let them go, otherwise they will just die.
