Hans Christian Andersen's Stories for children. I cried my eyes out each time I read "The Little Match Girl" and the original version of "The Little Mermaid" who, unlike Disney's, does not get her prince. I was truly enchanted by all fairy tales, and sadly only discovered Oscar Wilde's later, as I happened to be born abroad, but I devoured "One Thousand and One Nights", Grimm's and Perrault's Fairy Tales, and I was terrified by Baba Yaga in the compendium of Russian Stories. I still have the books, very battered, and I occasionally pull them off the shelves for a bit of nostalgia.
Visually, I absolutely adored Margaret Tempest's illustrations for "The Little Grey Rabbit" books written by Allison Uttley, in which I learnt English. I hunted all the books down one by one as an adult for my daughter, and, now they have been reprinted, I have bought them for my baby grand-daughter to read to her when she can understand, as they are delightful.

I liked The Little Prince and The lion the witch & the wardrobe too (and they made me cry) I also liked The swish of the curtain by Pamela Brown - about children setting up their own theatre & reread it many times (I wanted to be an actress when I was a child).

No Flying in the House. I don't recall who wrote it. That was when I was really small. Later I liked the Alanna series by Tamora Pierce, and the Tripods Trilogy by... John Christopher?

I loved the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. Those two series were my favorites in elementary school.
