It's the Odometer and it's those little numbers that roll up as you go down the road. If you have a tripometer that would be ideal for this mpg thing. But run you car almost empty to a quarter tank or under. then fill up your car till you can't get anymore gas in it.
Look at the pump and write down how many gallons of fuel you put in it.
Then write down the mileage of the car from the odometer" which is those numbers that roll up as your driving. Then drive your car until you get the gas gage about where it was when you filled it when it was almost empty. Then fill it up till you can't get anymore gas in it. Then look at your mileage.
Now subtract the mileage you had before from the mileage you have now. You should end up with a 3 digit number which is the actual miles traveled since the last fill up. Now take the amount of gallons used and divide it into the miles traveled. The gallons used is how much you just put in the car at this fill up. You now have your MPG's that your car got between the 2 fill ups.

You can figure it out by completely filling up your tank, then clear your trip miles. Next time you fill up, note how many gallons you put in your car. Divide that number with how many miles are on your trip odometer. Example: you drove 382 miles and put in 13.5 gallons of gas. Using a calculator type in miles/gallons. That will give you mpg.
If your car has the equipment, it will also tell you this on your dash. Look in your owner's manual for more details.

Heres what I usually do... Fill the tank up and record the mileage. Drive around as you normally would. When it gets time to get gas again fill the tank up again, and record the mileage and the amount it took to fill the tank up again. Now, take the difference in mileage, (m2 - m1) and then divide that by the number of gallons it took to fill the tank. Theyre you go. You have you average MPG. an example... you fill up and drive 300 miles, and it take 10 gallons to get you back to a full tank then youre averaging 30 miles per gallon.

When u fill up, write the mileage down. Drive like you always drive. When it comes time to fill up, write the mileage down. Subtract the two, this will give the mileage driven. Divide this amount by the gallons filled up w/ the second time. The answer is your mpg.

Miles per gallon depends on how fast you drive, how long you let the car warm up or not and even where you drive...Figure your mpg the old fashioned way...Go fill it up and clear your odometer...When you fill again, check your miles. I do this every time I get gas. My car varies between 19-21 mpg...

Its not posted on your vehicle. Search your car on-line and you can find the specs.
You can also find out actual MPG by keeping track of the amount of fuel used at every fill-up and the mileage travelled. This will take awhile but will be the most correct answer that you want.

Fill your vehicle with gas and stop when the pump cuts off.
Zero your odometer and then drive your vehicle untill you need gas again. Refill your vehicle again making sure to stop when the
pump cuts off. Now divide the gallons used to fill your vehicle by the miles on your odometer. this will give you your MPG based on your driveing habbits.
