The best free antivirus protection is AVG. Though I heard they will stop the free version this month. (hopefully it a rumor).
You should have 2 anti spyware programs (one as a backup) like Ad aware and spybot search and destroy.
A decent firewall: Sygate for me is the best but they no longer exist (because Symantec bought them out). A cool alternative is Zonelab firewall.
Install Spywareblaster as a preventive measure.
If you're concerned about cookies... better have Mozilla Firefox browser installed. Download it from their website only. It can exist with Internet Explorer. Once installed, you can monitor the cookies by going to Tools, Options, then Privacy, then the Cookie tab. Download the Cookie Culler extension for firefox. Then you're good to go!

AVG AV Free V7.1 will be discontinued on the 15th of
January. but the reason it is being discontinued is
that it has been replaced by a new free version 7.5.
Full details here http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
More on Grisoft; they have released a
new anti-root kit scanner as a free beta.
Ewido Now Renamed to AVG Anti-Spy In another Grisoft
development, the company has renamed and purportedly
upgraded the Ewido scanner they recently acquired to
"AVG Anti-Spy V7.5. It's part of the process of
re-positioning it from an anti-Trojan to an
anti-spy ware product. The free-for-private-use version
will stay, and I the trial period for the paid
version has been extended from 14 to 30 days. The free
and paid versions are the same. At the end of the trial
period a number of features, including the real-time
monitor, automatic updates and self protection from
termination are automatically disabled.
Ewido/AVG Anti-Spy are top class for me. and a good choice for a on-demand spy ware and anti-Trojan scanner to backup your primary anti-virus and anti-spy ware programs. In this role, the
free version is all that is needed.
oh and i always big up the scotty dog for patrol and keeping bho IE helpers banned.

For antivirus I would suggest avg from http://free.grisoft.com There is also a good free online scanner by kaspersky at http://www.kaspersky.com Alternatives would be avast from http://www.avast.com and Avira Antivir from http://www.free-av.com
You should only install one antivius application but the online scanner can be used with the others
For antispyware go to http://www.download.com and search for the following
Spybot search and destroy
Adaware
A-squared
Spywareblaster
All free and I would suggest using all of them. The first three scan for adware and tracking cookies the final one helps prevent malicious software being installed.

I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)
And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:
