Your answer is 0, because even though 0+8=8, 8x0=0.

it could also be -8 because -8 + 8 = 0, then -8 x 0 = 0

This equation becomes a^2 + 8a =0

or a*2 = -8a

or a = - (a^2) / 8

a = 0 would satisfy this equation. except for the minus.

So, it looks like we have the square root of a negative number. The number -0 will satisfy

Don't forget the first step - multiply the parentheticals by the first "a" ...

...so your first part of the solution would be...

...a(squared) + a8 = 0

then solve
