I grew up in Europe and even back then only spot checks were made at the borders for european passport holders. Last time I was there I barely noticed borders......it was a bit like the border between North and South Carolina

Yes, except when countries doesn't belong to the Shengen agreement (such as Eastern members, Great Britain and I guess Denmark).

I'm french, I go every two weeks to Germany without showing my passport or even my ID.

But when I go to Poland i have to show something, my passport or "identity card".
