With my first baby I had the ultrasound at 20 weeks. Just for this reason I am thinking about going back to the previous ob\gyn I went to

to jen's response this is also a reason why I want to get the ultrasound now instead of 30 weeks what if there is something wrong with the baby, we would have a chance to take care of the problem now. And what if at 30 weeks it is too late.

i've never heard of this. the 20 week ultrasound is also more importantly to see if the baby is developing normally, then to actually see the sex of the child. i thought about 20 weeks was pretty routine, but i don't know for sure. i would discuss this with our obgyn ask what his reasoning is for this and tell him about your concerns. if you are not happy i'd switch back to the old doctor.
one more thing, wouldn't it be more difficult to see the baby at thirty weeks? at twenty weeks they can see the baby as a whole picture and zoom in on all the areas. i would think if the baby was larger and all cramped up inside they might have a more difficult time.

That is unheard of! Especially because at 20 weeks or so they take all kinds of measurements and are able to determine if there could be something wrong health wise with the baby. Part of the reason it is done at 20 weeks is to give the mom an option if there is something wrong with the babies health. Waiting till 30 weeks would basically take away any option that a pregnant mom would have (abortion, etc). Maybe your current doctor is not in favor of giving a pregnant woman an option if there is something wrong with her baby, thus making her wait until 30 weeks when there is no longer any options but to deliver.
I personally would switch doctors, not because I would personally choose an abortion..but the choice is not the doctor's, its the pregnant mothers and your doctor has taken that choice away by making her patients wait that long.

You are kidding right? You are half-way through your pregnancy with a doctor who has taken care of you and your new baby from the beginning and you are going to change doctors, asking someone else to "come up to speed" on any and all of your medical statistics and information gathered over the last 20 weeks - just because you want to know the sex of your child? I would hope that the health of your unborn child would be more important to you than that. Perhaps you should spend some time researching the health statistics on moms and babies who stick with one ob/gyn vs. those who change doctors during the pregnancy.
BTW your guests will have time to buy you something appropriate, or you could have your shower rescheduled. You have plenty of time (months in fact) to do that. Why do I get the distinct feeling that this is more about you just WANTING to know the sex of your child and not being able to wait.
Wow - that felt like a Dr. Laura moment.

I had an ultrasound at 17 weeks and although the US tech told me it might be a boy he said he couldn't be sure until later on in the pregnancy. At 28 weeks I went ahead and had a 4-d scan done on my own to be sure, it's a bit pricey but well worth it I got pictures my baby that are amazng. Your pregnancy isn't high risk otherwise they would have done an US. The second ultrasound my doctor ordered was done at 36 weeks just to check the position and growth of the baby. I know it's tough but in recent years things have changed and doctors just don't do as many ultrasounds as they did before since insurance doesn't cover them. Good luck!

in the time of a common being pregnant 3 ultrasounds are given. the first round 8-9 weeks to verify being pregnant and to work out the toddler's heart beat, one round 12 weeks to envision for down syndrome and different issues and the perfect at 20 weeks to envision for down syndrome, sex of the toddler and different progression stuff. If I were you i'd ask the OB about the 12 week ultrasound, because that can verify for some abnormalities. i'm not declaring THERE ARE, yet in my opinion i'd truly get checked to attraction to close.

I've never heard of that. Some doctors will do as soon as 16-18 weeks. I was advised to wait until 20-21 weeks if I wanted to know the sex for sure. 30 weeks! That's way too late for a first US. Maybe it's done, but I've never heard of it.

Every doctor is different. Some don't even do ultrasounds now because of recent studies and their associated risks. My doctor did mine at 24 weeks. He said the reason was because sex determination was easier and more accurate that far along. In my next pregnancy I don't think I'll be having one at all.

That is very strange that they wouldn't do one until 30 weeks. The u/s at 20 weeks are more accurate with the info they provide. I don't know if you'll be able to switch this late in the game - some drs will take late transfers, others won't. Part will depend on how full her list is already.

No, usually 18-20 weeks. Did the doc say they must wait 'til 30 weeeks? Was he/she mistaken about how far along you are? You could maybe offer to pay for the ultrasound beyond what insurance pays to get it earlier.
