john proctor had high status n salem and was the leader of the church i think thats wut he was. but neway whn he found out that the gurls had been danceing n the forest naked or w/e he was outraged. also he tried 2 keep his name clean n salem, evn hidin his affair w/ abby. he was astonishd at the thot of witchcraft. hope this helps a lil
