I am always tired. I have tried taking over the counter sleeping pills but I still wake up in the night and it takes about 3 hours to put me to sleep. I feel like I could stay in bed all day yet I dont ever have any energy... what is going on?

Stop taking the sleeping pills. They are not meant for long term use and don't give the good, REM sleep you need to feel rested.

Read up on what you need to do to get a good nights sleep. Avoid bright lights before bedtime. That includes the tv and computers. Turn off all the lights except for one dim light, like a reading lamp. Create a "sleep routine." A warm bath, read, even the proverbial warm glass of milk. Avoid alcohol and vigorous exercise before bed. Too stimulating.

Tryptophan will help you feel sleepy. A little turkey or tuna before bedtime will help. Cherries have been show to cause the brain to release melatonin, the bodies sleeping chemical.

Make sure you get some exercise during the day, and eat well. Avoid sugar, just makes you slump.

Try a natural sleep aid. Valerian root is readily available. Use can also try Melatonin a half hour before bedtime. 500 micrograms , no more or you could have a "melatonin hangover."

Realize most people have a few sleepless nights, you should be able to make up for the lost sleep the next time.

If the condition persists, consult your m.d.

I know how you feel. It takes me about 3 or more hours of staring at the ceiling and tossing and turning to finally go to sleep, but then I wake up at least twice an hour. It's so frustrating!!!

You might have too many white blood cells. I would go to the Dr., and get your blood checked. In the mean time, to get you to sleep, try reading before bedtime, listening to music, or tv (not too loud though.) Get some of that lavender lotion and put it on before you get into bed, it calms the mind and helps you relax. Good Luck! Make that Dr. Appt!

You need to go to the doctor and have him run thyroid tests to see if they are functioning properly.

Anti-depressants can interfere with sleep as can alcohol consumption.. but this sounds like a chronic situation that requires medical intervention.

If you're overweight, you could have sleep apnea as well.

There are many different causes and a medical diagnosis is best.

You might be addicted to caffiene. Try giving it up for a few days. You migh get a monster headache, which is what Advil is for, but it passes quickly if you anticipate it. If that's it, you will probably sleep like a baby in a couple of days. That's what happened to me. I hope it works for you.

Caffeine, it kills a chemical in your brain that induces sleep if you drink too much. If you stop drinking caffeine your body will reproduce that chemical in about 1-2 weeks.
