I'm assuming you are using Windows. You might have a lot of services (these start up when your computer start up and running unnecessary ones will slow down startup time) and programs set to start up when your computer boots up. You can disable these services and programs that you do not need which speed up your start up time. A guide to see which services you need and do not need can be found here: http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12. To determine which programs you would like to startup when your computer starts up, type msconfig in Run and go to the startup tab and deselect anything that you do not want to start up when your computer starts up.

When your pc startup the Bios and window will go thru a check of all hardwares and loading drivers. There are many things you can do is speed up the startup process, just find it on the net. Here's a few tips : go into the bios and disable devices that you don't use on your pc like parallel printer port, unused ATA channel, skip the memory check,.........In Window try to disable some of the apps running in the backgrounds since you won't need the majority of those. There are more but that should get you a good start.

More than likely you have way too many programs starting with Windows. Especially if you have Real Player installed. Go to freeware files .com and download Ccleaner or Sweepi, Both of these will fix registry problems and let you stop programs from loading with Windows. Sweepi would even tell you if the program is necessary or not. Plus they will remove un need files as well as other fixes. Then De frag your drive.

You may also have a lot of programs in your startup. Check the Startup folder in your Start menu and also type 'msconfig' in the Run box, and choose startup. if you have a lot of items, uncheck things or uninstall, or reformat your hard drive and reinstall. reinstalling usually is the best way to get your computer fast again. spyware might also be holding your system down.

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it:
You can find it here:
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings

most likely due to services.
You can do a search on the internet for services that are unneeded for XP.
