Flags are out of the question. No flags in our community pool. I want to do a straight backstroke as possible to avoid hitting othere swimmers. Any tips for me?

Is your community pool indoors or outdoors??

If it is indoors, pick a beam or something on the ceiling to be your guide. If there is a beam that is the length of the pool try to look at that and be under it at all times. Titles are also very helpful...

If it is outdoors, train your eye to judge the distance to the lane line. I have had to do it when I swim outside in the summer. Look out of the corner of your eye when swimming backstroke, also keep close to the lane line and it is easier.

Also, you might want to have someone watch your backstroke to see if one arm has a stronger pull than the other, because that might factor into swimming in a straight line.

Here's some tips:

1. Have someone watch your stroke. Most people who can't swim backstroke straight cross one of their arms over the center line when swimming. Have someone watch and make sure you aren't doing that.

2. Your body should roll but your head should stay still. If your head is rotating when you swim backstroke you won't swim straight.

3. When swimming indoors, line your nose up with a line on the ceiling and keep it there for every length of the pool.

First of all and most importantly don't move your head! Choose a cloud or something to focus on and don't look away from it.(Airplanes don't work very well as they move and then are gone before you know it) Second rotate. When your arm is out of the water make sure that shoulder is up and the other one is down. Third make sure your arm goes into the water straight and pinky down before you pull.

WEll find something in the sky to focus on the focus on that point whether its a cloud and try not to pull more with one arm then the other as that can cause you to swirve around and change directions and just keep your arms close to your ears and that should help you.

i agree with LZYXOXO
also have someone check out your backstroke because one of your arms might enter reaching too far ''over'' your head
A: it causes you to go crooked
B: its EXTREMLY bad for your shoulder and can cause Shoulder problems
