These words were enough to allow some governments to spend millions supporting governments who were supposed to be bulwarks against these spectres such as Suharto, Pinochet, the Shah of Iran despite their human rights records for example. ALso 'freedom fighters' were financed by the Western governments, for example the Contras (where the Western Agencies were also involved in drugs to finance the operation), or the Mujahideen (guess where Al Qaeda gained advanced training and weapons). Of course the question of whether these 'freedom fighters' were doing anything better than the regimes they opposed was irrelevant.

Nowadays, the words have changed into 'Terrorist'. Bear in mind, Iraq was not invaded because Mr Hussein was a dictator, but because he was supposed to have links with Al Qaeda (the links were afterwards denied, but the image implanted in the minds of people). There are many more dictators around the world, even those in countries where human rights records are apalling, but who are supported by the west. Check out the regimes in the old Soviet block who allow Western forces to use their bases.

Similarly, the reason used for the DNA databases, SMS storage... is to fight terrorism. But who is a terrorist? Is it the Muslim man who mumbles prayers on the plane(1)? Is it the Jewish man with a long beard mumbling prayers on his flights(2)? Is it the Tamil-speaking man talking about cricket on his cell phone while waiting for his flight(3)?

It's simple we are scared, by, as you say, a 'Storybook definition' of a terrorist, by pronouncements made and later denied but who were said with enough force to make an impact on our minds - Saddam Hussein has links with Al Qaeda and is responsible for the 911 bombs, Iraq has WMD, Nicaragua is two hours drive away from Texas...

Because we are scared, we allow the governments to strip us of more freedoms, we think we are exchanging these freedoms for more safety.

The key is 'We allow'.

The governments have their own agenda, but we ultimately, in so-called democratic countries especially, have the say as the people. We decide whether we, like lobotomised sheep, believe in the 'storybook definitions'. We decide whether we allow our freedoms to be strangled slowly but surely.

The only way out is to bring these topics in the open and discuss them, make people conscious, make people think. Some lobotomies are just hypnotic blocks; information can break the spell and we cannot rely on mainstream media for that.
