Physical therapy and accupuncture seem to help some and I don't want surgery and am trying to avoid a cortisone shot. Any suggestions for more "organic" treatments? Thanks

The only thing that really worked for me was the shot the above poster is speaking of. It's an epidural steroid injection. I am sorry to not give a better answer. It was an out-patient procedure - i had it done in November of 2004 and have had no problems since. It's been wonderful. I have a herniation at L4/L5 and L5/S1 and was in tremendous pain. I had had one of the shots years ago when i first hurt my back and it didn't help, but this one - i'm not sure if the stars were aligned just right or what, but it's been 2 years and knock on wood! :)

The shot itself was painless - they light you up with lidacaine first and then will inject a pain killer also. There is a little pinch and then pressure and they have to inject it slowly - like over a few minutes - and then it's over - i think it took maybe 20 minutes total.

I had tried just about everything - chiropractor, adjustments, herbal wraps, therapy ...

Good luck to you - i do know how painful it is.

Unfortunately, I cannot think of any "organic" treatment. I do however know of a procedure in which you can be awake the entire time. This procedure is done in a interventional radiology room. I forget the technical name of it but they inject a cement like substance into the disc space and you are able to leave the hospital that day. It is relatively painless and takes much less time to recover than old time surgery.

Talk to a chiropractor who's specialized in "network spinal analysis (NSA) ".
