I don't want to be buddy-buddy, just to get along w/them. I treat them nicely. But is there anything specific that might help? My BF and I have been together only one month, but we're getting close quickly. We've been friends for 1.5 years. Is getting his kids bday gifts overkill? Just something small. What about asking them to go to the mall? Anything else?

how serious is serious?
I think that one month is WAY to soon to start thinking about being friends with the 11 year old.
If he does not have custody of them, maybe you can wait until the five or six month mark.
SInce you have known your boyfriend for 1.5 years, you probably have an idea how the mother of these kids are.
Will SHE be an obstacle?
Good luck, I am so happy to read that you have an interest in their feelings.
I have seen quite a few that wish that the kids would just die. (figuratively not literally)

I think that anything you do that shows you love and care for them (if you do) or you think that they will like you more for it, YOu should do it! Just don't expect immediate results or something you would really hope for.

And I think it shows their maturity on their part, if they tried to get along with their step relatives.
