Hey Rachel,
There are those that will tell you it is a long road. If it is long, you should get started soon.
Here are some great sites on the internet. Some for agents, some for auditions, some for lessons. To act professionally, you will have to join the SAG (Screen Actors Guild).
Enjoy, study hard, take lessons close to home too!

Go to your local library and ask to see the various catalogs for the colleges and extended studies programs in your area. Someone is ALWAYS offering acting classes. While you're at the library, find some books on drama and acting. There are several which are considered required reading for anyone serious about acting.
Whatever you do, don't make the mistake of thinking you're a "natural" and everyone will see your talent when you take the stage or when the camera is turned on.
Also, be skeptical of newspaper and magazine ads promising a career in acting through a particular business. Many of these "schools" prey on people who are led to believe that they can get into TV/movies/stage without any formal training. At best, these schools will require you to take out a huge student loan (usually financed by the school at awful interest rates).
Acting is a discipline like anything else and requires dedication. If you choose to get into acting you should do so because you love doing it ... not because you have grand dreams of becoming a multi-millionaire screen legend.
