No. I tried this too. I got my iPod for X-Mas.
I have Windows Me on the computer I'm using right now (the worst Windows OS ever made) and a dual OS of Linux and 98 on another.

I tried using an old iTunes download off the Apple website.
It worked on my computer but wouldn't recognize my iPod Nano.
I'm now waiting for an Widows XP upgrade I bought off eBay.

P.S. (edited addition) I just downloaded LimeWire and while it looks like an interesting addition it doesn't replace iTunes. In fact their own website says you have to have iTunes downloaded before you can use LimeWire with your iPod.
-Also I've had WinAmp for years and I have the latest version on my computer now. It also doesn't replace iTunes.

Connect your ipod to your computer via the USB cable that comes with your ipod. WARNING: If itunes opens and asks you if you would like to sync up your ipod click NO! Step 2 After your ipod is connected, open my computer and look for the ipod drive. It should be in the (F:) drive. Step 3 In windows vista: Open the ipod drive and click on ORGANIZE ---> folder and search options ---> View ---> show hidden files and folders. In windows XP: Open ipod drive and click tools ---> Folder options ---> view tab ---> click show hidden files and folders ---> apply Step 4 Now you should have a new folder called ipod_control. Open that folder up and you should see the following: 1. calendars 2. contacts 3. ipod_control 4. notes 5. photos Step 5 Open the ipod_control folder ----> Then open the music folder ----> Copy each one of those folders (should look similar to these: F00, F01 ...) onto your computer. You can do this by creating a folder on your desktop and dragging the files into the folder. Step 6 Open itunes and insert the new folder you created on your computer's desktop into: library ---> Music Step 7 You can now sync your ipod to this new computer with out losing all of your music.

iTunes is required to transfer songs, photos and video onto your iPod. If you no longer have the CD-ROM that came with the iPod, you can visit the Apple website and download iTunes from there.

Take care.

Erm you need itunes. if you have problems with windows 98 and itunes. Just be patient. Only run itunes when using it. Be patient, sometimes itunes can appear to have crashed, even say not responding, even when it is working.

I don't think so. But if you lost the CD or something, there is a download thing on the website:
