Cuica

pronounced: QuEEka

it's a drum, open at the bottom end, skin on the top end. The centre of the skin is wrapped tightly round one end of a stick, which points down into the body of the drum. With one hand you rub the stick with a scrap of damp cloth, and with the other you press the skin to change the note. Harder you press, higher the note.

I have one, and can't play it properly - it sounds like a fart when I do it. Some D***strap said "what's this string doing here?" and untied it - stick came out. B******** so he is.
