I think it is before they starting using heavy metal. Like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin.

Acid rock was a product of the 60's and 70's, when LSD was popular. The best examples of acid rock are bands like the Grateful Dead, Jim Hendrix, Carlos Santana. Other examples include Yes, Pink Floyd. you can get CDs from these bands in any large retail music store or on-line at e-bay or amazon.

Acid rock is a form of Psychedelic rock and was the first form of it to achieve popular acclaim. The term acid rock was much used in its heyday, but has fallen into disuse except for putting this music into its historical perspective.

The term refers to a type of music meant to be experienced in conjunction with lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD, commonly called "acid". Characterized by an off-beat style, vivid imagery, and sometimes strange sound/musical effects, acid rock often settles into a hypnotic groove wherein a listener (and possibly even the band) can "get lost" within a song. For example, the Grateful Dead would perform while on acid, and once they started improvising within a song (or "jamming"), the song could conceivably go on forever. One song, "Dark Star", largely improvised, would sometimes last 5 minutes, but other times it went on for nearly an hour

Originally, it was another name for "Psychedelic Rock", or "Hippy Music", in the late 60s. Known for being filled with trippy textures and monumentally long spaced out jams, the style was everywhere in the late 60s. originally through the Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, then later through Pink Floyd. Even the Beatles around 1967 would qualify as acid rock.
Today??...Phish seem to be the most noteworthy one going on.

Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Big Brother, really any band from the '60's San Francisco scene is considered 'acid rock'. It comes from people taking LSD and listening to the music. Hope this helps

Its not really a well defined genre. I might say anything from Tool to Gratefull Dead, although alot of people would reserve a label like that for underground music.

Acid does rock though...
