I agree. When I was young I listened to some stuff that seems offensive to me now but I did not get it back then. But that was back in the 80's during the PMRC battles, which accomplished nothing productive by the way. I remember clearly the first time I ever heard 2 Live Crew. But music has gotten a lot raunchier and since then. And people have learned how to be explicit and still avoid the warning label.
Either girls are not paying attention, they don't understand, or they have been so indoctrinated that they think they are only valuable if they have a sexy booty. Also, so many young men have failed so badly for so long at being good father figures that probably a lot of girls just don't know that men can treat women any other way.
It's sad really.
I am not putting down any music style. I love a lot of different kinds of music. And I am not for censorship. I am for common sense, especially among parents. I just think that too many musicians, not just rappers, don't care about what they are promoting to children.
A good example is Drake Bell, you know Mr. squeaky clean 'Drake' from the Nick kid's show 'Drake and Josh'. You would be surprised at some of his lyrics. Their are no actual cuss words in any of his songs so the CD does not have a warning label. But he talks about how much he enjoys ripping a girls clothes off, his 'up periscope' and where he is going to land his 'submarine' with this girl, all in the same song. My six year old nephew has this CD! That is the only reason I know about Drake's music. Fine, so what. Adults, listen to Drake all you want. But my son is not going to learn how to make me a grand mother from Drake Bell, at least not while he is 7 yrs old anyway. Drake is on a kids show for Christ sake! Did no one think to suggest that he use a different name/image for his music? Or even better, he could have waited until after his kids show ended before he released that particular song. I mean not all of the songs are like that. He could have left that one out. But obviously no one cares about who give sex instructions to 6 year olds. Good Charlotte has cuss words in some their songs but the messages are not really bad (except ‘Bloody Valentine’ but that is a make-believe story type song and they don’t market specifically to kids anyway). And Pink, the CLEAN version of 'Stupid Girl', I think has a good message for girls. It’s all so convoluted.
Parents just have to pay attention. But this is bad because too many parents are not paying enough attention to their children about everything, not just music. Maybe the parents don't know any better themselves.
Anyway you look at it, young girls lose out.

I believe that some songs in that genra are very degrading, but not just to african american women but to all women and even men. When a song talks about women like they are only here for sex or refers to the artwork of the human body in a deragatory way, then yes it is degrading (to all women). It is degrading to men though as well when it implies that the only reason a man would be with a women is because he needs something satisfied or that he is stupid enough to do half of the things these songs in question are saying. However, I would not lump every song by every artist in one genra into a stereo type though because music is usually catagorized by rythem, tempo, instuments, and the way it is sung and not just by lyrics alone. While there are an overwhelming number of hip hop songs that this holds true for there are also a great deal of other songs in different generas that the same can be said of.

It's generational. read this, if you want a historical answer that predates the Transatlantic Slave trade.
Rap/ hip hop may seem like a new music phenomenon but it is not. It started in West Africa centuries ago, in the regions of Togo and Benin. In these regions, there is a tribe of people where the men look very young and EVERY LAST WOMAN looks really old (like over 80 yrs old, and to show wrinkles on dark skin is very hard to do) But anyway, the women look so old because at the age of 13 they are sold into concubinage, start having kids, and build the homes, gather the food, and raise the children. The man does absolutely NOTHING. The men lie around and eat, talk, and play music. And the women do all the work.
In my opinion, this is a tradition that has been carried over from Togo and Benin.
During the Transatlantic slave trade, many of the people who were sold came from Togo and Benin. These people populated the U.S. Slaves also came from Nigeria. But they were sent to Brazil, Europe, and other places. Nigerians typically do not like Rap, and the descendants of Nigerians in other countries ALL OVER THE WORLD do not like the message or beat of rap or hip hop music. Neither do other people from other African nations.
But many people of Togolese and Benin descent do. That is why Rap is only popular in the U.S.A. It is not just a modern day cultural phenomenon. It is a passed on, generational thing.
If you don't believe me ask any person from Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia, or Somalia (or anywhere else) and see if they dislike rap. 9 times out of 9, they will say that they hate it.
They usually prefer Ethiopian influenced music such as Old Gospel music (it sounds like "Man of Constant Sorrow" from O Brother Where art thou.), blues, jazz, or something with wind , percussions and string instruments (like harps, violins, or pianos). That is the kind of music most Africans who are not from Togo and Benin like.
Rap and hip hop have spread from Togo and Benin, much like Voodoo and Hoodoo.

i know what your saying. howver people have different values. wether or not the values are corrupt or good is something else. also media often affects and change peoples values. media tells them whats important and what not. whats not good and what is good for them wether its true or not. some females confuse power and sex. females think that if they are able to get a man through sex or sexuallness means they have power. along with the concept "men can look but cant touch" idea into them. or that being open like that will get them attention they want.when there actually just inviting themselves for a raipe.or giving the men the idea hat there just a "hoe". rappers are able to sell alot off of this because who doesn't like sex in america? ( besides radical muslims, terroists, and certain buddists monks)

You may have to dig a little, but all hip hop does not degrade women. For some strange reason rappers who do seem to sell more. Don't blame the supply, but good question for the demand.

i agree with you but i dont listen to what they say i aint a ho*e or a dic* suckin bitc'h and not all hip hop is like that!!! but remember sex sells nowadays. i dont pay attention to the words to be honestly its the beat that makes a song tight and the chorus/ hook is what makes it a chart topper
i like hip hop because of the beats and it makes me in a good mood and gets me hyped besides thats what i grew up on
too bad women dont look at it the same way some women actually listen to what anyone tells them, if someone tells a girl she is ugly a lot of times she believes it or if they say a gurl is fat then she wants to diet!!!

I like it because it is all in good, lighthearted fun. Music is there to help people relax and have a good time. Of course I hear the lyrics, but some of it is funny! If you get all offended, then you're just taking yourself way too seriously. If people don't like it they should just turn it off. Relax and enjoy...

when your in the "Club" dancing You don't take meaning to the songs most just want to shake it and try to get some booty to take home!
but then again my views are this!
if your in the club trying to get some booty then the words in those songs fit ya just right!~
but rock is best! :)
some led zep!! :)
red hot chilli pepper!
only if those hip hop chicks could dance to that!

Well if your from the ghetto or the hood like i am...its not really dehgrading woman. I honestly do listen close to the lyrics but they are not meant to hurt woman...its not like they actually go out there and do what they say in there lyrics. I love hip hop and not all rappers talk "bad" in there lyrics. You have to live it to understand it and since you dont understand it then you didnt live it.
