The Articles of Confederation had not been a good idea, and life during the British rule started to look good, so the founding fathers had to keep the nation together by introducing a new set of laws, that would give the federal government [delagates] enough power to solve disputes between states, have ONE decision for the country, and all that comes with being united, etc. But not enough power to abuse and bully the states [reserved powers they were called]. This way, the states could not bully the federal gov. [as it was with the articles of confederation], and the federal gov could not bully the states [as it was with the monarchy].
With this in mind they came up with what today is known as the constitution.

I agree with "It's Me" but would like to add another piece of information. Although the Founding Fathers were creating a wholly new document to support their views for their fledgling country and government, they borrowed heavily from the British legal system...which has its roots in the Magna Carta.

Self protection.
They were wealthy landowners who were scared to death after Shay's Rebellion, so they figured the Critical Period under the Articles of Confederation wasn't working for them.
They got together to "revise" the Articles, and ended up throwing them out in a meeting in Philadelphia.
Patrick Henry, notably, was not there, and was quoted as saying, "I smell a rat".

That anyone can be free from the suppression of the freaks in England, they thought its their god given right to freedom and to defy the worst military flop the world has ever seen. They believed in their own rights, to not be ruled by a tyrant 3000 miles away, taxation without representation, their own form of government that was fair to all, and to get away from the English as we all have tried which alone sounds enough to die for.

they wanted freedom from england. no country can exist without laws and so to make their dream of becoming our own country closer to a reality, it was necassary for there to be ground rules. there also had to be a national government put in place. where they came up with what actually to put in it? i have no idea. i assume careful planning, looking to other countries for guidelines, and lots of prayer (most of them were strong christians which is a major reason they wanted their own country to begin with; seperation from the church of england and freedom to express their religion they way they wanted).
