It never really healed back to its original state, probably. It didn't hurt anymore, so you thought it was better, but it was still weaker and more prone to injury.
Your doc or a physical therapist might be able to recommend some exercises to get it back in its original shape, or it may be that it will always be a little weaker.
You might consider laying off the booze and Jig-dancing :-)

You may want to consider how much differently you had to walk during the healing of the original injury...just to keep the pressure off the knee. If it has become habitual, you will always be creating a tension on the knee.. Making it very prone to re-injury..If you walk barefooted across a linoleum floor and hear any squeaking with one foot, you will understand what I am referring to. This alteration will reflect up as high as the hip level and cause some distortion of the posture upward. If you have one hip higher than the other, you will also understand why the involvement is so complex. Concentrating on the knee is just symptomatic treatment..

Therapy, therapy and more therapy.
Most people who get injured, reinjure the same area because they have not rebuilt the muscle to where it was before it was injured.
When you were injured, you didn't do anything with that leg, right?
Well, it atrophied and got weaker. In order to be able to be normal again, let alone really push on it again, you will need to carefully rebuild the muscle back to where it was.
And don't rush.
You also might want to avoid drunken jigs...

Alot of injuries like that you will always have some kind of painful reminder they are there. Tendons and ligaments are tough, they don't always heal right and sometimes parts of them never heal. I suggest you see an orthopedic Dr. They can direct you to Physical therapy and maybe break the cycle of you injuring yourself. Good Luck!

First of all, you should go to the doctor. He may suggest a brace and physical therapy. You probably have scar tissue, but your injury will get worse if you don't do anything about it.

It will never be completly normal. Do some extra strength training on that leg to help keep it stable.
